Flexibility is Key in Construction Resource Management
I’ve been thinking about flexibility a lot lately. Each day seems to present new and unexpected challenges. It turns out a life spent in electrical contracting has been good preparation for those challenges. Grit goes a long way.
But it’s not enough to work hard right now. Contractors need to be able to find their footing in a world with unstable ground. In a guest piece for Procore’s Jobsite, I wrote about how a flexible construction resource management system is critical for success:
Labor scheduling doesn’t happen in a vacuum. A workforce management system is only valuable if it can adjust quickly to change.
The world isn’t static. People aren’t static. LaborChart isn’t static. This year, we’ve moved offices, launched a new website and are poised to roll out a series of features based on feedback from the teams actually using our product day-in and day-out.
Flexibility is built into the way we run our company and the way we’ve built our digital workforce management platform. We don’t just adapt or react to change. We understand that change is the norm.
Communication is Key
People are craving information—accurate, real-time information—in order to help them make decisions. Whenever possible, we as leaders, have an obligation to provide our teams with as much information as possible. And that means finding ways to reach people where they are with the method of communication—email, text or alert—that is easiest for them.
When people have information, they feel like they are part of the decision-making process and are more likely to contribute meaningful suggestions and be candid about what needs to change. Transparency is the currency of continuous improvement.
Mobile resource management is getting the right people on and off projects at the correct time; but it’s also about the freedom that it can offer your team. I’m a firm believer in finding the right people, training them up and then giving them the space to make our company better.
A digital workforce management platform is the tool that makes this possible. It creates a pool of shared information and makes communication seamless. It also gives people the flexibility to make decisions to move projects forward.
Digital workforce management is the present and the future. Contractors need to reach labor in a way that is efficient and acknowledges that even without the undue pressure of COVID-19, the face and pace of construction is changing.
Don’t get tangled in knots. Be willing to stretch. The flexible construction tech companies will be the ones that bend, but don’t break.
